USC campuses closed through end of spring semester
University of South Carolina students will begin online classes on Monday that will continue through the completion of final exams in May, the school announced. Also, May graduation has been postponed until a to-be-determined date.
SCETV to offer curriculum-based programming during closure
The programming, addressing a variety of content areas, will begin March 24 through a partnership with the S.C. Department of Education. S.C. public schools are closed until March 31 in response to the new coronavirus outbreak.
USC initiative recruiting professionals to rural classrooms
Transition to Teaching is a one-year graduate program for professionals with a degree in an area other than education who want to teach. The initiative is being rolled out in Colleton and Orangeburg counties.
Able SC offering online skills program
Free classes open to all S.C. students with disabilities will cover topics such as time management and managing stress while state schools are closed. Registration is required.
Richland Soil and Water Conservation District awards grants
Three grants have been awarded to local educational institutions totaling $2,500 to support those organizations' environmental efforts. Since 2012, the district has funded 75 Richland County projects.
Tate named new USC provost
Bill Tate was among 3 finalists for the post and was also 1 of 4 finalists for the position of USC president last year. He becomes the first African American provost in the university's history.
Power:Ed awards total of $160,000 in grants
The philanthropic arm of the S.C. Student Loan Corp. awarded $75,000 to the S.C. Chamber of Commerce Education & Workforce Foundation and $85,000 to professional development nonprofit Multiplying Good.
USC, Prisma Health form new partnership
The agreement aims to further research and innovation and identify mutually beneficial relationships with industry partners. The organizations will collaborate in areas including intellectual property patents and cybersecurity.
Fellowship extended to Midlands-area college students
Applications for the $3,500 Ethel Bolden Minority Fellowship are being accepted until May 15. The fellowship, available through the Richland Library Friends and Foundation, honors the longtime Columbia librarian and teacher.
MTC programs make national diversity rankings
Midlands Technical College had 5 career areas recognized for degrees awarded to African-American students in a national publication's annual rankings. Overall, 14 MTC career areas made the rankings of degrees conferred to minorities.
New elementary school at Fort Jackson to be dedicated
A dedication ceremony will be held Wednesday at Piece Terrace Elementary School. The school includes Department of Defense Education Activity 21st Century School design features such as expandable classroom walls.
State students improve in Advanced Placement exams
The number of students who took Advanced Placement courses increased in 2019 from 2018, as did the number of students who scored 3 or higher on the exams. In 2019, 20.3% of S.C. graduates scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam.
