COLUMBIA, S.C. (Sept. 18, 2018) — Over the past four years under the leadership of President and CEO Tim Arnold, Colonial Life has become one of the nation’s fastest-growing voluntary benefits provider.
Now protecting more than 4 million of America’s workers and their families, Colonial Life also provides entrepreneurial opportunities for more than 12,000 independent insurance agents and employs more than 1,200 full-time workers in Columbia and in 46 sales offices across the country.
Arnold’s career of leadership all started on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he earned both a degree in business management and, a short time later, his master’s in business administration.
On Sept. 14, accompanied by his family and Unum Group CEO Rick McKenney, Arnold was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
“One of the first things you realize as you move through a career in leadership is that no one accomplishes anything alone,” Arnold said. “So many people give so much of themselves to this wonderful university – to students past, present, and future. They dedicate their time and talent to make their communities stronger. They have built extraordinary things. I learned so much at the university – about the value of education, about how to lead, and how to be part of a team.”
Arnold joined Unum (then known as Provident) immediately after graduation. He held leadership positions in Underwriting, Corporate Planning, Client Services, National Accounts Sales, and Benefits. He served in leadership roles in the Chattanooga, Tennessee; Worcester, Massachusetts; and Portland, Maine, offices.
After 26 years with Unum, in July 2011, Arnold joined the senior team of Colonial Life.
Arnold’s commitment to investing in others extends beyond the workplace. He also invests heavily in his community. He currently serves as the board chair for the S.C. Center for Fathers and Families and the American Heart Association – Metro Board in Columbia. He is also co-chair of TransformSC, an education initiative of the S.C. Council on Competitiveness that brings together business leaders, educators, students, parents and policy-makers in an attempt to transform the public education system to ensure every student who graduates is prepared for careers, college and citizenship. Arnold also serves as the Vice Chair for the United Way of the Midlands.
