COLUMBIA, SC – Mark C. Moore, a Member in Nexsen Pruet’s Columbia office and co-leader of the firm’s White Collar Defense/Government Investigations practice has been appointed by Chief Judge Roger L. Gregory to serve on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Appellate Panel Committee for a three-year term, beginning March 1, 2018.
The Fourth Circuit’s CJA Appellate Panel Committee is chaired by Circuit Judge James A. Wynn, Jr. and includes attorney representatives from each district in the Fourth Circuit, a federal defender representative, the circuit executive, the clerk, the senior staff attorney and the CJA budgeting attorney. Representatives are appointed by the chief judge for staggered three-year terms, with no member serving more than two such terms.
The committee serves as an advisory board to the court, making recommendations on applications for panel membership, on panel administration, and on other questions arising under the Criminal Justice Act.
Moore was recommended to serve on the committee by Senior Circuit Judge Dennis W. Shedd and Circuit Judges William B. Traxler, Jr. and Henry F. Floyd.
Moore is a former federal prosecutor who served in multiple management positions in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina. He has tried over 85 criminal cases in state and federal courts, has handled dozens of complicated high-profile cases and was the lead prosecutor in the longest federal criminal trial ever in the District of South Carolina. He joined Nexsen Pruet in 2013 and conducts internal investigations, defends cases brought under the False Claims Act and represents corporations and individuals facing grand jury, civil and criminal investigations conducted by federal and state authorities. Former Fourth Circuit Chief Judge William “Billy” Wilkins and Moore jointly lead Nexsen Pruet’s White Collar Defense/Government Investigations practice, and Moore currently serves as co-chair of the South Carolina Federal Bar Association’s Criminal Law Committee.
