S.C. BlueCross Medicare Advantage Plans Offering Fitbit Devices at No Cost to Members

Through a first-of-its-kind program in South Carolina, members will be given the popular Fitbit Alta wearable device to motivate them to be active and help them reach their health and fitness goals.

Columbia, S.C. – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina’s Medicare Advantage plans are connecting members to a healthier lifestyle by offering a Fitbit (NYSE: FIT) Alta ® wearable device at no cost to all members who enroll in a 2018 plan.

The unique program is bringing real-time health and fitness information to the wrists of a population in tune with living a healthy lifestyle. Fitbit Alta automatically tracks steps, distance, calories burned, active minutes and duration of sleep. By using a Fitbit Alta, members will get reminders to move throughout the day and can track their progress with mobile and online tools.

“Our Medicare Advantage members are hikers, runners and cyclists,” said BlueCross Medicare AVP Don Edwards. “They are not resting in retirement. By providing our members with a Fitbit device, we are empowering them to live a healthy, more active life and also challenge their friends and family in a fun way to increase activity. It is exciting helping this group reach their wellness goals one step, stretch or spin at a time.”

BlueCross will use Fitbit’s population health dashboard to provide Medicare Advantage members’ access to Fitbit Challenges to help them stay motivated and engaged on their personal health journeys.

“This program is one example of how the power of wearable technology may be used to increase engagement, improve health outcomes and drive a positive return for health plans,” said Adam Pellegrini, general manager of Fitbit Health Solutions. “Seniors are now more connected than ever, and by providing a Fitbit device to Medicare Advantage members, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has created a plan to inspire and engage these connected seniors with new tools to live a healthy and active life.”
