South Carolina Future Minds announces appointment of Debbie Jones as Interim Executive Director

Florence, SC — South Carolina Future Minds (SCFM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Debbie Jones as Interim Executive Director, effective July 1, 2019. Ms. Jones most recently served as Director of Programs for the statewide organization and, as a founding member of its staff, is uniquely positioned to lead the nonprofit into its next chapter of impact.

Debbie Jones

SC Future Minds is a business-led foundation advancing programs and policies for excellence in public education. Ms. Jones appointment follows the departure of Caroline Mauldin, who served as chief executive since 2016 and played an integral role in sharpening SCFM’s focus and investments in public education as a driver of economic and social progress.

“SC Future Minds’ mission has always been to connect private resources to public education,” said David Cote, Chair of the Board and VP of Human Resources at BlueCross Blue Shield of South Carolina. “Debbie has a track record of growing sustainable and impactful partnerships and programs through her nearly decade long service with SCFM. And her efforts supporting and advocating for educators and children in the public education system uniquely positions her to step up as Interim Director.”

Over the past 20 years SCFM has convened over 4,000 education advocates and 700 teachers to celebrate public education, provided critical home libraries to 2,100 rising first graders in low income schools, and gifted over $3.8 million of in-kind and cash donations directly to educators. SCFM has collaborated with key partners like the Riley Institute to highlight evidence-based programs impacting our public education system, and most recently, launched the first ever STEM Educator of the Year Award, powered by Comporium; in an effort to celebrate educators in the STEM field and raise awareness of the lack of quality STEM education in our state.

After volunteering with The School Foundation in Florence, SC, Debbie began working with SC Future Minds in 2009, then a new organization created to serve as a “resource development office” for South Carolina’s public schools. The mother of three public school graduates, she is a lifelong advocate for public education. “My advocacy journey for public education started twenty years ago when my children walked through the doors of Carver Elementary in Florence. Since then I have been honored to work with teachers, principals, superintendents, community leaders and now a Board of Directors that are all dedicated and invested in the success of students across our great state. SCFM is uniquely positioned to continue as the state-wide voice for education in South Carolina and I couldn’t be more thrilled to lead the organization into the next chapter.”

Ms. Jones has served in a wide-array of leadership roles at local and state levels, including the SC PTA, School Improvement Council, YMCA Florence, and Emerging Leaders Florence. She is a graduate of the Nonprofit Leadership Institute at Francis Marion University and currently sits on the board of First Steps of Florence.
