Columbia, S.C. - Today, South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman announced that five South Carolina schools were recognized by the United States Department of Education as 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
“I am so proud of our schools that have been recognized nationally for their academic excellence,” said State Superintendent Molly Spearman.
"Congratulations to the teachers, staff and school and district administrators who work tirelessly every day to ensure that their students are prepared for success. Our 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools are a testament to the great things happening in South Carolina public education,” concluded Spearman.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.
Now in its 35th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 8,500 schools. On Nov. 6-7, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the U.S. Department of Education will celebrate with these honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The five South Carolina award winners were recognized for the “Exemplary High Performing Schools” category, meaning they are among the state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
