Aflac supports Meals on Wheels

Aflac officials present a check to Senior Resources in support of the Meals on Wheels program

Aflac, the leading provider of voluntary insurance sales at the workplace, has awarded a grant in the amount of $9,595 to Senior Resources to provide Meals on Wheels service to elderly and disabled residents of Richland County. The funding will allow Senior Resources to provide meal delivery service to five clients for a full year.
With a corps of more than 400 volunteers, the Meals on Wheels program delivers a hot, nutritious meal each day to clients’ homes. The nutritionally balanced meals provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for the homebound clients. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County.
“This support from Aflac will go a long way in meeting the basic human needs of our elderly and disabled neighbors,” said Senior Resources Executive Director Pam Dukes. “In most cases, the meal our volunteers deliver is the only meal of the day for the clients we serve. Without meal delivery, many of our clients would be forced to choose between paying for food, or for medication and household expenses.”
According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), South Carolina ranks eighth-worst in the nation for senior citizens who are threatened with food instability. Nearly 17 percent of South Carolina’s senior citizens are threatened with hunger, according to a 2018 report from NFESH.
“We are extremely proud to be a part of a program that delivers meals that bring needed nutrition and friendly visits to seniors and people with disabilities within our community,” said Virgil Miller, executive vice president, Aflac U.S. chief operations officer and president, Aflac Group. “Aflac knows that we have a responsibility to our community and supporting organizations like Meals on Wheels is just one way we can do our part to make our community a better place.”
