Richland County to offer rental assistance program
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program, funded by a U.S. Treasury grant, will provide up to 12 months of rental and utility assistance for eligible households. The application process opens April 5.
Some Richland County offices now open by appointment
County residents can sign up for appointments with the county assessor's, auditor's and treasurer's office, among other services. The county will also hold a virtual meeting to address flood-prone properties on Thursday.
S.C. Secretary of State warning businesses about scam
Mark Hammond's office said it has received complaints about a letter sent to businesses purporting to provide a 'SC Certificate of Status' for $87.25. Such a certificate is not issued or required by the state, Hammond said.
Coastal wetlands projects receive $5 million in grants
Projects in five S.C. counties each received $1 million from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to increase protection for coastal habitats, some of which are home to threatened species and others which help provide clean drinking water.
4 S.C. organizations receive diesel emission reduction grants
DHEC's State Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, funded by the EPA, awarded grants totaling more than $285,000. Recipients included a Lexington County propane business and a Fairfield County biofuel company.
Committee awards $30 million in disaster recovery grants
The federally funded grants are to be used to lessen loss of life, injury and property damage from future disasters. The S.C. Office of Resilience awarded the grants at a March 9 meeting.
West Columbia extends face mask ordinance
Face coverings must be worn inside most public buildings and by food service and retail establishment employees until May 1. Violations will result in a fine of not more than $25.
Former SCANA CEO pleads guilty to federal fraud charges
Kevin Marsh pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud related to the failed V.C. Summer nuclear reactor project. Marsh faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
SC Housing launches rental and mortgage assistance program
Qualified applicants can receive up to $7,500 for rent and mortgage assistance in the $25 million program, funded by the federal Community Development Block Grant program.
Public hearing to discuss proposed rezonings
The proposed rezoning of 11 parcels of land in Richland County will be discussed on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The Richland County Planning Commission recommended approval for eight of the proposals in November.
Richland County completes 2015 flood buyouts
The county has acquired and demolished 57 properties damaged in the historic flood through a federal program, with the last property demolition taking place last month. The county is now focusing on rebuilding and repair efforts.
S.C. Senate confirms DHEC director
Dr. Edward Simmer was selected by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control's board in December from a pool of 83 applicants. He was most recently the CEO of TRICARE Health Plan.
