15 S.C. communities receive share of $6.4 million in funding
The latest round of Community Development Block Grant funding, allocated annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and awarded by the S.C. Commerce Department, will benefit 40,916 residents.
Executive budget focuses on small businesses, education

Program seeking partners to assist renters, homeowners
The SC Stay program from SC Housing, set to launch in February, will provide up to $25 million in federal funds to help applicants with mortgage and rent payments. SC Housing is seeking agencies to help identify eligible households.
Preservation and conservation grants available in Richland County
The application deadline for grants worth up to $50,000 is Feb. 5. Nonprofits, neighborhood organizations, governmental agencies and other organizations can apply for the grants, which require a 20% match.
Loan program application deadline extended to Dec. 31
Applications for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program for the COVID-19 pandemic will be accepted pending availability of funds for the loans, which include an interest rate of 3.75% for small businesses and 2.75% for nonprofits.
Richland County business license renewal deadline is March 15
With county offices closed because of COVID-19, all businesses, including home-based ones, must renew their licenses online or by mail by March 15. The county recently mailed renewal applications to about 10,000 businesses.
More than 2,900 applicants to receive $65M in relief funds
A total of 2,970 small and minority businesses and nonprofit organizations will receive SC Cares Act Relief funding. The S.C. Department of Administration coordinated the program payments, which will occur through January.
Former SCANA CEO to plead guilty to fraud charges
Kevin Marsh will plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in federal court on Tuesday. Marsh retired from SCANA in 2017, the same year the V.C. Summer nuclear project was abandoned.
DHEC selects health care CEO as new director
Dr. Edward Simmer has been selected from among 83 applicants to lead the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. The announcement comes as Gov. Henry McMaster, who must approve the selection, tested positive for COVID-19.
Motor Fuel Income Tax Credit cap increasing to $85 million
Tax year 2020 is the third in which the credit can be claimed. For the 2020 filing year, 79,000 returns claimed the credit, for a total of $3.4 million, according to the S.C. Department of Revenue.
Workshops to provide grant application information
A pair of virtual workshops on Dec. 10 and Dec. 16 will offer eligible organizations information about Richland County's accommodations tax grants, hospitality tax grants and service-based discretionary grants.
SCANA settles Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit
SCANA will pay a $25 million penalty and SCANA and SCE&G will pay $112.5 million in disgorgement plus prejudgment interest. The SEC alleged the companies defrauded investors through false statements regarding the V.C. Summer project.
