Central Carolina Community Foundation Awards over $400,000 in Scholarships, Highest Total to Date

June 6, 2018 (Columbia, SC) – Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands’ expert in philanthropy, has awarded over $400,000 in scholarships, the largest amount granted since the Foundation’s founding in 1984. Scholarships will go to some of the most outstanding students in South Carolina and across the country for the 2018-2019 school year.
Based in Columbia, S.C., the Community Foundation manages 41 scholarship funds. Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and eligibility criteria according to the recommendations of the donor. Many of the funds have been established as testaments to the donor’s passion for education and rewards students for their hard work.
For example, the LinkScholars Program Scholarship Fund was established by The Columbia Chapter of The Links, Inc. in 1997 to identify and support graduating, low-income, college bound African American high school seniors from central South Carolina. The scholarship was designed to support these seniors financially, emotionally, and socially and assist them in succeeding in higher education. This year, the LinkScholars Program will award $25,500 in scholarships to 17 students.
“The Columbia Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has supported African American students in the Central Midlands for over twenty years, reports chapter president, DeAndrea Benjamin.  “This year, 17 students will receive over $25,000 to continue their education. Not only are these students academically excelling but many are overcoming serious health challenges and homelessness. Despite these challenges, these young men and women are actively involved in their communities. They are future leaders. We are proud to invest in the future of students like these through the LinkScholars program.”
“Our scholarship funds are among the many ways that donors in our community work with the Community Foundation to make a difference in the Midlands and beyond,” said Community Foundation president and CEO JoAnn Turnquist. “Through the generosity of our fundholders, students now have the opportunity to achieve their academic goals without the financial burden that often accompanies a college education. We congratulate each of our scholarship recipients and wish them well as they continue to learn and grow.”

Central Carolina Community Foundation will begin accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year in January 2019. For more information about applying for scholarships or establishing a scholarship fund at the Community Foundation, please visit www.yourfoundation.org or call 803.254.5601.
