The Foundation to host live interviews on local Black philanthropic impact every Friday in August

Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands’ local center for philanthropy, invites the community to join the annual Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) celebrations throughout August 2020. Local celebrations will include weekly stories, action-focused communication on social media, and live interviews at 10 a.m. every Friday in August at www.facebook.com/CentralCarolinaCommunityFoundation.

BPM is a national, coordinated effort to celebrate African American and African-descent giving in all its forms. The Community Foundation and its African American Philanthropy Committee celebrate this important month each year to support and promote the voices of our region’s diverse philanthropists. The Foundation also promotes Give 8/28, a day devoted to financial giving to Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits and serves as a sponsor of the national Black Philanthropy Month Summit.

“We believe diversity is one of our region’s strengths and should be celebrated,” says JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation. “We also believe that our actions should reflect this belief. Black Philanthropy Month and Give 8/28 provide an opportunity for our community to recognize the impact of black philanthropy and, financially support Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits serving our region.”

Promoting the Voices of Black Philanthropy in the Midlands
During the month of August, the Community Foundation will share stories of Black philanthropic impact on the Midlands. Each Friday, Foundation staff members will interview Black philanthropists and Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits to share their philanthropic story on the Foundation’s Facebook page. Community members can watch the live interviews every Friday at 10 a.m. starting August 7. More details can be found at www.yourfoundation.org/bpm.

Black Philanthropy Month: Foresight 20/20
This year’s BPM theme, Foresight 20/20, recognizes our communities are calling us to do what is right, right now. And while we cannot predict the future, we can make decisions and investments now to shape the future. Founded in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Copeland-Carson and Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network, the initiative encompasses self-organized events, community dialogue, and charitable giving across the nation. Community members can follow the national conversation via social media by following #BPM2020 and learn more about ways to celebrate at www.blackphilanthropymonth.com.

Third Annual Give 8/28 Inspires Giving to Black-led and Black-benefiting Nonprofits
The third annual Give 8/28 is scheduled for Friday, August 28, 2020. Led by the Young, Black, and Giving Back Institute in Washington, D.C., the giving day initiative culminates Black Philanthropy Month. The initiative urges people to financially support black-led and black-benefiting organizations. Registered nonprofits within Central Carolina Community Foundation’s 11-county footprint that raise $500 or more on August 28 through the Give 8/28 or Midlands Gives platforms will be entered into a drawing for one of 10 $500 matching grant prizes provided by the Foundation. Donors are encouraged to make financial contributions directly to organizations through www.give828.org/ or through the Midlands Gives year-round platform at www.midlandsgives.org. A new feature on the Midlands Gives year-round platform now allows donors to filter their search results to find Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits.

More information about Black Philanthropy Month and Give 8/28 can be found at www.yourfoundation.org/bpm.
