COLUMBIA, SC - An experienced employment lawyer who fights for clients in courts and before administrative agencies, Jack E. Cohoon is now a partner at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel.

Cohoon joined the firm two years ago as a special counsel. In addition to employment law, his practice includes civil rights. He also represents clients in criminal records expungements, pardons, occupational licensing, and other matters that can act as barriers to employment.

Since joining Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, Cohoon has continued to fight to move law forward. He’s fought for safe working conditions for disabled teachers during the pandemic, as well as for the accrued PTO leave for essential workers in hospitals. He’s brought successful Freedom of Information Act litigation invalidating a state commission’s actions taken during illegal secret meetings. He has also brought numerous suits to protect the rights of employees discriminated against due to race, sex, national origin, religion, age, and disability.

He recently received the Civic Star Award from the Richland County Bar, an annual honor that recognizes outstanding community service. He’s been recognized in “Best Lawyers in America” and “Legal Elite of the Midlands” for his work in employment law.

Cohoon previously served for nearly 14 years as an attorney with South Carolina Legal Services, rising to the position of senior litigation attorney and head of the Employment Law Unit. During that time, he represented clients in cases involving discrimination, unemployment benefits, unpaid wages, and wrongful termination.
