COLUMBIA, SC – Announcing plans to attend college is a momentous day in the life of a high school senior. To celebrate the academic achievements and choices of the students, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE) is sponsoring College Decision Day South Carolina. As part of this statewide initiative, many high schools across our state will be holding events during the months of April and May.
College Decision Day South Carolina is inspired by the NCAA’s National Signing Day to reinforce that excellence in the classroom deserves as much attention as excellence in athletics. College Decision Day South Carolina intends to generate this level of excitement for all students who make the choice to attend college, regardless of their participation in a sport. The goal of College Decision Day South Carolina is to recognize high school seniors for their future educational plans and to motivate younger students and families to prepare early for postsecondary education. High schools are encouraged to hold events in the spring to coincide with the time most seniors must inform a college of their plans to enroll. At least 115 events are planned throughout the state during Spring 2019 and Commission staff looks forward to the number growing each successive year.
Each year, more and more high schools are seeing the benefit of celebrating College Decision Day in their schools and communities. Ms. Naomi Isreal, a College Advisor at Great Falls High School in Chester, SC shared “Last year was the first College Decision Day at Great Falls High School. This was an awesome day to bring together students from all grade levels, parents, teachers, and community members. This year we will expand our program in hopes that we will attract larger audience from the community and admissions counselors. Great Falls High School is so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this statewide collaborative through SCCANGO."
One of the important aspects of the decision day events is the opportunity to share accomplishments. Sabriyya Pou, a Midlands Technical College Upward Bound participant and Senior at Airport High School is looking forward to her high school’s event, stating that “what excites me most about College Decision Day is knowing that I have finally made it to the finish line of my high school career. I am happy to share my college decision with my peers and individuals that have helped me make it to this point. Having a College Decision Day event at my school excites me most because I know that I have finally made it and get the chance to share it with the ones around me.”
Lauren Williamson, a Senior at Williamsburg Academy, in Williamsburg, SC echoes the sentiment of the importance of the event, stating that “College Signing Day made everything feel so official. It was fun!”
