College Students Give Back To Local Charity

COLUMBIA, SC— On April 24, 2019 at 10:00 AM and 2:45 PM, two psychology classes from Midlands Technical College will tour the Ronald McDonald House, 2901 Colonial Drive Columbia, SC 29203. These students will also bring an enormous donation of toys for the Ronald McDonald House Toy Room.

Holly Beard, who is a Social and Behavioral Sciences Instructor at the college, has her students pick out and write about a toy that will help a child’s development. The toys are collected at the end of each semester and brought to the Ronald McDonald House. “The project upholds Midlands Technical College’s Statement of Values, to serve as a resource for community engagement and partners with business, education and government to enhance the growth and prosperity of the region,” said Beard.

Thanks to the generosity of these students these toys will fill the toy room. This allows the Ronald McDonald House to continue giving toys to all of the patients and siblings that are currently staying or have stayed in the House. “The joy on our children’s faces when we take them in the toy room is priceless. Sometimes it takes them thirty minutes to look through every toy and choose. Without these student’s generosity we would not have been able to bring so much happiness to these children.” said Liz Atkinson, Operations Director,

The Ronald McDonald House Columbia, SC opened May 18, 1983 and in 1996, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Columbia, SC was formed, merging Pediatric Family Services of the Midlands and Ronald McDonald Children's Charities. Today, RMHC Columbia, SC is an active, energetic organization with a volunteer board of directors and professional staff serving families and children through two cornerstone programs, the Ronald McDonald House and the Ronald McDonald Family Room. The first Family Room opened in Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in 2003. Then, in 2008, with the construction of the new Children's Hospital, a new Family Room opened on the first floor of the Children's Hospital and serves families of children receiving care within the hospital. We are supported by a caring community of volunteers and generous contributors and sponsors.
