Bill Killough brings years of experience to Riley Pope & Laney, the last 29 years as a member at Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC. As a business attorney he has counseled buyers, sellers, borrowers and lenders in more than 200 commercial transactions. As a registered patent attorney he has successfully obtained patents for over 300 devices on behalf of his clients, and he has filed more than 1,000 trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on behalf of his clients. Killough is an experienced litigator and mediator specializing in intellectual property and commercial disputes. “I am excited to join the skilled legal professionals at Riley Pope & Laney. Bill earned his Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and his Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees at the University of South Carolina. He taught patent law at the University of South Carolina School of Law for six (6) years. Killough is a Fellow of Litigation Counsel of America, and has been recognized by Lowcountry Legal Elite, South Carolina Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers of America in the areas of intellectual property, innovation, litigation and corporate law. Best Lawyers named him the Charleston SC 2015 Corporate Lawyer of the Year. Killough is a monthly contributor to the Federal Circuit Bar Association Circuit Case Digest providing Federal Circuit patent case summaries. He annually reviews patent, trademark and unfair competition case law in South Carolina for Thomson Reuters’ Practical Law, Intellectual Property and Technology. Special Counsel Ernest “Lip” Lipscomb, III literally wrote the book on patent law. With more than 45 years of experience, Lipscomb is the author of the seminal eleven-volume treatise in the patent field, Lipscomb’s Walker on Patents, author of Lipscomb’s Patent Claims and has testified as an expert witness in patent cases. He formerly served as an adjunct professor, teaching patent law, at the University of South Carolina School of Law.
