The Columbia Museum of Art and the CMA Contemporaries Board are thrilled to unveil the theme of the Contemporaries’ annual Ball: Modern Masquerade. The event will be held Saturday evening, January 26, 2019 at the Columbia Museum of Art. Times for the event are 7:00 – 11:00 PM.
Modern Masquerade is a black-tie optional event that forecasts more than 500 attendees for this memorable evening. Event amenities include heavy hors d’oeurves and an open bar featuring liquor, beer and wine. Live music will be featured from the Reggie Sullivan band in the main atrium while D.J. D DUBB of Higher Level Entertainment will play in the new CMA loft event space. Hors d’oeurves will be provided by Southern Way Catering and Crisp Event Rentals will assist with equipment and décor.
This event will be an exciting night for both the Columbia Museum of Art and the Contemporaries. A new, custom interactive artwork by New York artist Daniel Rozin will be unveiled at the CMA during the event (approximately 9:00 PM). This piece, which has been under production for more than a year, is partially funded by money raised by the Contemporaries. Rozin will be present at the Masquerade to discuss the piece and address the audience once the art has been unveiled.
Acquiring Rozin’s interactive artwork is the latest philanthropic project the Contemporaries has conducted for the Museum. “The Contemporaries have a long tradition of supporting the CMA through a number of art acquisitions over the years,” shared Jase Glenn, chairman of the Contemporaries’ board of directors. “We are excited to have Danny Rozin add to that tradition with his latest work. We think Phase will be an incredible compliment to the other works in the CMA’s second floor atrium, including the Dale Chihuly and Henry Mandel pieces, which the Contemporaries also helped the Museum acquire over the last decade.”
The installation of Rozin’s work will coincide with the completion of significant renovations to the Columbia Museum of Art and the reconstruction of the adjacent Boyd Blaza which is maintained by the CMA. The renovations and construction are being completed under the leadership of Della Watkins, the executive director for the Columbia Museum of Art.
“The CMA promises to be vibrant and playful upon completing the construction renovation and the Rozin installation will mimic this vibe,” stated Watkins. “Museum guests will immediately be drawn to this one of a kind commissioned work specifically designed to dynamically commingle motion and light in the lobby and atrium spaces.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Daniel Rozin is an artist, educator and developer, working in the area of interactive digital art. As an educator, Rozin is an Arts Professor at ITP, Tisch School of The Arts, NYU where he teaches such classes as The World- Pixel by Pixel, Project Development Studio, Introduction to Physical Computing, Designing for Digital Fabrication and Kinetic Sculpture Workshop.
Born in Jerusalem and trained as an industrial designer, Rozin lives and works in New York. His work has been exhibited widely with solo exhibitions in the US and internationally and featured in publications such as The New York Times, Wired, ID, Spectrum and Leonardo. His work has earned him numerous awards including Prix Ars Electronica, ID Design Review and the Chrysler Design Award.
Rozin’s work is classified as interactive art. Interactive art includes installations and sculptures that have the unique ability to change and respond to the presence and point of view of the viewer. In many cases the viewer becomes the contents of the piece and in others the viewer is invited to take an active role in the creation of the piece. Even though computers are often used in Rozin's work, they are seldom visible.

About the Contemporaries
The Contemporaries mission is to provide an opportunity to support the CMA through promoting the museum and its programs, diversifying the museum's membership, and leading the next generation of museum supporters. Each year, the Contemporaries host a series of social and cultural events that bring members of the Columbia community together at the museum. A major goal of the Contemporaries is to contribute artwork to the CMA. Since it's inception in 1994, the scale and grandeur of the art the Contemporaries have donated have significantly increased. In 1998 and again in 2000, the group contributed framed works to the CMA’s collection. In April 2010, using over $360,000 in funds raised by the Contemporaries, the CMA completed installation of the Dale Chihuly Chandelier in the museum’s David Wallace Robinson, Jr. Atrium. The installation marked the first of its kind in the state. In 2014, funds raised by the Contemporaries helped the CMA acquire a giant, wall-size mural named Tatara Fire by New York-based artist Henry Mandell. The mural is the first digital painting to enter the collection of the CMA. Now, the Contemporaries are doing it again. At the Modern Masquerade, a work of art from New York artist Daniel Rozin will be revealed in its new home on the ledge above the Boyd Plaza entrance to the Museum.
