WASHINGTON – Columbia Councilmember Tameika Isaac Devine has been appointed vice chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) 2018 Council on Youth, Education, and Families. This council guides and oversees the work of the Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. Additionally, the council fosters peer-learning and networking opportunities for elected municipal leaders; stimulates effective leadership on behalf of children, youth and families; and elevates the voices of city and youth leaders in broader discussions of the needs of youth, children and families.
Devine says, “I am excited to serve in this leadership role for the important NLC council. The Institute for Youth, Education and Families is the go to place for city leaders seeking to improve outcomes for children and families and serving in this capacity will not only allow me to shape policy here in the City of Columbia but nationally as well.”
NLC President and Little Rock, Arkansas, Mayor Mark Stodola made the leadership appointments for the council. East Point, Georgia, Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham and Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mayor Andy Berke are the co-chairs of the council. The other vice chair of the council is Tacoma, Washington, Mayor Victoria Woodards.
“We have been delighted to work with Councilmember Devine on a broad range of issues related to children and families, including financial inclusion and childhood obesity, and she has distinguished herself as a strong champion for our next generation,” said Clifford M. Johnson, executive director of NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. “Her experience and insights will strengthen our national work, and we look forward to lifting up her initiatives in Columbia through this NLC leadership role.”
