Dominion Energy awards $10,000 grant to Serve & Connect to expand ‘Greg’s Groceries’

Program supplies police with food boxes to give to those in need

Columbia, SC. (February 12, 2019) –Dominion Energy has awarded a $10,000 grant to Serve & Connect to support Greg’s Groceries. An initiative within Serve & Connect’s Compassionate Acts Program, Greg’s Groceries provides officers with boxes of nonperishable food to give to those in need. The grant will allow the program to expand to new departments, reaching more people statewide.

“Serve & Connect is committed to igniting positive change through police-community partnerships,” Kassy Alia Ray, CEO and Founder of Serve & Connect shared. “Greg’s Groceries provides an invaluable resource to help foster positive connections and trust between police and community that lead to community improvements. Thanks to the support from Dominion Energy, we will be able to expand the impact and reach of this critical resource.”

“We recognize many people in our communities struggle to afford the basics needed for a secure, healthy and productive life,” said Kristen Beckham, external affairs representative with Dominion Energy. “We also know that police officers often come into contact with those who are vulnerable and have opportunities to show kindness and compassion. By partnering with Serve & Connect, Dominion Energy is excited to give police officers in the Midlands groceries to help those in crisis.”

Greg’s Groceries was established in partnership with Harvest Hope Food Bank. Each box of Greg’s Groceries provides approximately 21 servings; enough to help feed a family of four for a week. Boxes are distributed by police on calls, at community events, and through referrals. Since August 2018, over 1,200 boxes have been distributed to food insecure households in over 57 zip codes throughout the Midlands. Data collected indicates that the program is successful at building trust between police and the community.

Dominion Energy presented the check to Serve & Connect in February, joined by law enforcement partners and Harvest Hope Food Bank.
