COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 20, 2019)—Hammond, an independent school offering students pre-kindergarten through grade 12 a thoughtfully developed academic experience, announces that Cherie Herring, Hammond’s lower school music teacher, was the keynote speaker and presenter at the Music EDnet Daytime conference on May 17, 2019 in Melbourne, Australia about effective integration of technology in music education.
Herring was invited to speak after she won the 2018 Mike Kovins TI:ME Teacher of the Year award in 2018. This award is given by Technology in Music Education and recognized her significant achievements as an outstanding music educator for her use of technology in the classroom and its use as a tool to reach children. Herring’s professional development efforts include writing articles and she also contributes to books and lesson plans. Herring makes other presentations for TI:ME conferences and other music education conferences nationwide. She has assisted numerous educators with successfully integrating technology into their classrooms.
Specifically, Herring’s students at Hammond work with technology in her classroom to invent instruments and then code the instrument’s sound through software called Scratch. Herring also builds reality learning experiences for students using programs Metaverse and Artivive. These experiences engage students as they discover the instruments of the orchestra. And this year, third grade Hammond students had the opportunity to work with Jim Sonefeld of Hootie and the Blowfish to create a green screen infomercial about a famous South Carolina musician.
“Cherie has been invited to speak at this international music education conference to share more about the major advantages our Hammond students are able to access through her work in technology in music education,” said Chris Angel, headmaster of Hammond School. “Cherie’s work ensures that all Hammond students find learning about music stimulating and interesting.”
