Columbia’s first boutique hotel recognized for renovations to historic building
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Hotel Trundle, Columbia’s first boutique hotel, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Nail Award by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. This award is in recognition of Hotel Trundle’s contribution to enhancing the physical character of the greater Midlands region through the renovations of their building. Hotel Trundle will be honored at the 5th Annual Columbia Impact Awards ceremony on February 20, 2019 at the Columbia Marriot during a luncheon and reception.
This is the second year that the Golden Nail Award has been presented by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce at their annual Columbia Impact Awards. It is presented to a business or property owner for exemplary contributions to the physical character of the greater Midlands region through cosmetic or commercial means such as restoration of a façade, historic building, or re-purposing of a blighted space during the previous calendar year.
The owners of Hotel Trundle, husband and wife team Marcus Munse and Rita Patel, saw a “unicorn opportunity” in the idea of opening a boutique hotel in downtown Columbia. It was an opportunity to use their architecture degrees, their passion for historical architecture, and their background and experience in the hotel industry to take three historic buildings—Western Auto, Rose Talbert Paints, and Powell Furniture—and create something magical with them. With help from The Boudreaux Group (architect), POND Interiors (interior designer), and Mashburn Construction (contractor), Munse and Patel’s dream came true when Hotel Trundle opened their doors in April 2018 to their first guests.
“It is quite an honor to be recognized with this award from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce,” Hotel Trundle co-owner Rita Patel said. “It is an indicator that our crazy vision wasn’t so crazy after all! The beauty of past buildings is that they tell a story, and we’re excited to be a part of the next chapter of our trio of buildings.”
Hotel Trundle, co-owned by husband and wife team Marcus Munse and Rita Patel, opened its doors in April 2018 and is located at 1224 Taylor Street in downtown Columbia. Wrapped in color, creativity, and charm, the 41-room jewel resides inside of three historic buildings combined into one—the first of its kind in all of downtown Columbia. They have rewritten the rules of Southern Hospitality with a unique blend of curated guest experiences and services, good old fashion thoughtfulness, and an eclectic, 20s-era Art Deco style.
