Rebecca Engelman Appointed Regional President
Philadelphia, Pa. — AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need, operating in 15 states and the District of Columbia, announced that J. Michael Jernigan is retiring as Regional President and Senior Vice President. He will continue to work with the company in a special advisory role to the Chairman and CEO, Paul Tufano, through the end of 2018.
An early advocate of managed care, Jernigan founded Select Health of South Carolina in 1995 to help low-income families access quality health care by creating strong relationships with providers in the state. Its First Choice plan was the first Medicaid managed care health plan in South Carolina. Select Health became part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies in 1999.
“It has been my honor to serve in an organization that is devoted to individuals and families in need,” said Jernigan. “And it has been especially gratifying to work with the dedicated staff of Select Health and AmeriHealth Caritas, and the state leaders and community representatives who work tirelessly to improve the wellness of our fellow South Carolinians.”
Jernigan is a South Carolina native who graduated from Clemson University and began his professional career working with hospital clients in 1977. After 20 years with various health provider organizations across the country, he returned to organize Select Health with a mission of helping individuals access care and stay well while building healthy communities.
“Mike has been a tremendous asset to the company, and we will miss him as a wonderful colleague, generous friend, and inspirational leader,” said AmeriHealth Caritas CEO Paul Tufano. “Mike’s vision and passion have contributed to Select Health’s being the top-rated Medicaid plan in South Carolina. We celebrate his many accomplishments and also recognize his groundbreaking advocacy for helping underserved Americans build healthy and successful lives.”
Rebecca Engelman Promoted to Regional President
Rebecca Engelman, formerly Market President for Select Health, has been promoted to Regional President of AmeriHealth Caritas. Rebecca has been with Select Health of South Carolina since 1996 and played a pivotal role in leading the organization in areas of medical management, quality and health plan operations. She served as Market President for AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana between 2013 and 2015 and Market President for Select Health since 2015.
“We’re excited to appoint Rebecca to the role of Regional President,” continued Tufano. “As she’s risen through the ranks, she has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the business, and deep expertise and compassion for the South Carolina Medicaid market.”
Engelman graduated with honors from the Medical University of South Carolina with a Master’s degree in nursing and emphasis in Health Administration.
Courtnay Thompson Appointed Market President, Select Health
Engelman’s successor at Select Health is Courtnay Thompson. As Market President, Courtnay will be responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and daily operations of Select Health and its First Choice plan. Since May 2015, Thompson has served as Director of Plan Operations and Administration. She has been with AmeriHealth Caritas since 2009. “Given her close knowledge of the Select Health business, I’m confident that Courtnay will continue to position Select Health as the top managed care organization in the South Carolina market,” stated Mr. Tufano.
Thompson has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
