Columbia, SC – The American Heart Association (AHA) is proud to announce Jay Hamm, Chief Operating Officer at Palmetto Health Richland, as the 2019 Midlands Heart Walk Chairman. Hamm will lead the community mission and fundraising efforts for the Heart Walk in the Midlands to help achieve the American Heart Association’s 2020 impact goal: to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent, while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent.
As chairman, Hamm is tasked with managing a volunteer Executive Leadership Team to recruit more than 6,000 walkers with a fundraising goal of $600,000 to support lifesaving heart disease and stroke research, education, and programs.
“I am honored to serve as Chairman of the 2019 Midlands Heart Walk” said Hamm. “One in 3 people in South Carolina have been told they have high blood pressure and the obesity rate in the Midlands has reached 40%. There is an urgent need to change the culture of health in the Midlands and for the community to become more active and heart-healthy because it will save lives.”
The Midlands Heart Walk is an opportunity for people to initiate changes in their health through walking, while raising funds to help prevent heart disease and stroke—America’s No. 1 and 5 killers. The annual event is a non-competitive, 3-mile walk in which teams are created by employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.
“Palmetto Health has been an invaluable partner to the American Heart Association and a leader in community health” said Parker Ogden, Midlands Development Director for the AHA. “We are thrilled to have Jay Hamm as our 2019 chairman as he truly exemplifies our mission of health and wellness while encouraging his employees and community to do the same”.
The 2019 Midlands Heart Walk will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Colonial Life Arena.
