Kershaw County, SC – March 15, 2022 Billie McLeod, Register of Deeds recently announced that Kershaw County has completed an extensive digitization project, placing online thousands of records dating back to the county’s founding in 1791. Kershaw County staff and the public now have secure, remote access to 231 years of data and images, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Digitizing provides a valuable public service by providing convenient access to information without needing to handle the original documents that are often fragile. Offering online access to records eliminates the need to travel to the office, helping to protect constituents and office staff during public health emergencies. By digitizing these documents, Billie McLeod, Register of Deeds is also ensuring that Kershaw County’s valuable records are preserved and backed up electronically in case of disaster.
Kershaw County worked in partnership with Cott Systems to scan and organize the records using Cott’s Online Index Books software.
Billie McLeod, Register of Deeds said, “These records are irreplaceable and extremely valuable. Having them backed up electronically is a great safety precaution. It has also reduced traffic in my office tremendously and reduced operating expenses.”
Records from 1791 are now digitally available and searchable online by visiting https://www.kershaw.sc.gov/government/public-records/register-of-deeds.
