Columbia, SC (November 14, 2018) Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics South Carolina received the Guardian Award during the 2018 Law Enforcement Torch Run International Conference. The LETR Guardian Award was created to recognize one outstanding Special Olympics Accredited Torch Run Program. South Carolina was recognized for the commitment and dedication to growing the cause of Special Olympics by carrying and keeping the Flame of Hope burning bright for our athletes.
LETR began in 1981 as a run and has grown into an international program with the mission of raising awareness of and funds for Special Olympics programs. Officers across our state raise funds through Polar Plunges, rooftop sits and many other unique events. Officers are also involved as volunteers in Special Olympics sports programs, serving as coaches as well as event volunteers. In South Carolina there are currently 95 law enforcement agencies who participate in LETR.
All funds raised in South Carolina through LETR go directly to athlete opportunities. Special Olympics Athletes in South Carolina have a choice of 26 different sports in which to participate. Also offered are health, education and leadership programs.
2018 has been a banner year for Special Olympics South Carolina topping 30,000 athletes
participating and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Special Olympics and international recognition for the Law Enforcement Torch Run program.
