COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gibbs Leaphart, a member of Robinson Gray law firm, has joined the board of SoundBites, a local nonprofit that helps young people get what they need to develop their musical talents.

According to the group’s website, a group of Columbia friends started SoundBites in 2017 “with one collective goal: to provide the gift of music through the proper equipment, instruction, and funding to all of those in need with a desire.”

The organization brings together government, businesses and other community partners “to help inspire underprivileged children to discover and develop their hidden musical gifts and talents through access to musical instruments AND proper instruction.” The idea is to “not only increase self-esteem and self-confidence but give our youth healthy ways to express themselves.”

SoundBites stresses that “current music programs in state schools are beneficial to many children. However, with limited funding and programs, the schools are not able to keep up with the traditional and nontraditional musical instruments and musical styles which interest many of our children.”

SoundBites seeks to bridge that gap.

Gibbs has been playing music since the mid 1990’s, when his band Five Way Friday was part of the South Carolina music scene, playing clubs and parties all over the southeast.

“I really think SoundBites is a perfect fit for me,” said Gibbs. “I look forward to getting involved and helping kids pursue their passion for music.”
