House representative opens bookstore that offers community hope.

The shelves are lined with more than 6,000 titles of discount-priced books and Bibles at Lexington’s newest Christian bookstore. Biblestore Outlet, an initiative of the mission organization OM Ships International, has opened its doors to the public.

The store, on Sunset Boulevard, was officially opened by Lexington’s local member in the state House of Representatives, Rep. Chris Wooten. As he cut the ceremonial ribbon Representative Wooten said, “The new Biblestore brings hope and will be a great store for our community.” He also presented Myles Toews from OM Ships with a house resolution, commending the enterprise.

OM Ships International is the non-profit organization that supplies a volunteer-crewed ocean-going ship with literature for distribution around the world. Since 2006, over 100 containerloads of Bibles and Christian books have been sent from South Carolina to port cities across the globe.

The Lexington store follows on from the success of the flagship Florence branch, which opened last June. While business has been tough for many sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic, Biblestore Outlet has seen increased sales of books that minister to people’s spiritual needs: “When coronavirus hit, the demand for Bibles jumped,” says John Satterly, Managing Director for Literature. “It’s clear that people want God’s Word as they search for something meaningful to put their trust and hope in.”

With 95% of books priced at $5 or less, the store is already popular. Topics range from family and relationships to devotionals, journals, novels and reference material. There is also a vast range of Bibles and an extensive children’s and teenage selection.

The new store brings employment to the Lexington-Columbia area; with vacancies for a full-time manager as well as part-time evening and Saturday staff.

Biblestore Outlet is located at Palmetto Plaza, 5140 Sunset Boulevard, Lexington (across the road from Target). Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am – 8pm.
