Despite a recovering economy and improving numbers on Covid-19 cases, food insecurity – caused by the pandemic – remains a major issue for millions of Americans including in the Columbia area. In fact, food insecurity is up more than 40% according to the Feeding America nonprofit. The urgent need to help feed local families has prompted the food delivery service Bite Squad and local restaurants to launch an emergency food drive.
The popular app will collect non-perishable food donations at select restaurant partner locations in the area. Bite Squad will then deliver all the collected food items to local food banks. Food organizations have warned it may experience massive food shortages as demand has spiked during the Covid-19 crisis.
Bite Squad has partnered with these area restaurants for the food drive: Beef 'O' Brady’s – Columbia; Dickey’s Barbecue Pit – Columbia; Cool Beans Coffee – Columbia; East Bay Deli – Irmo; Clean Juice – Lexington; Bloomin Bean – Blythewood. The restaurants have also adjusted their menus to offer deep discounts on some of your favorite foods resulting in cheaper prices for your meal and savings going to those in need.
Items can be dropped off in the donation bins at each participating restaurant until June 30, during their regular business hours. Those dropping off food will receive a coupon for a free delivery with Bite Squad the next time they use the service.
The most-needed food bank items include proteins (canned tuna, dried or canned beans, soup, peanut butter), grains (high-fiber cereal, oatmeal, pasta, rice), canned fruits and vegetables, and bottled water.
