Local Utility Continues Giving Campaign with Community Partner, Wateree Community Actions, Inc.

South Carolina Water Utilities Presents $50,000 Donation to Wateree Community Actions

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina Water Utilities, Inc. (“SCWU”), formerly known as Palmetto Utilities, presented a third donation of $50,000 to Wateree Community Actions, Inc. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 as part of the utility’s ongoing efforts to invest in the local community.

Since 2020, SCWU and its subsidiary Palmetto Utilities have donated $150,000 to Wateree Community Actions, Inc. to provide financial support to lower-income families in Richland and Kershaw counties. The donations are part of S.C. Water Utilities, Inc.’s larger community engagement efforts across the Midlands, where the utility has also created an internship program with a local high school, participated in municipal clean up events, and partnered with local colleges and universities to establish training programs for students interested in entering the water industry.

“We take a lot of pride in being engaged with the communities that we are fortunate to serve”, said Craig Sorensen, President of South Carolina Water Utilities. “Partnering with local nonprofits like Wateree Community Actions, Inc. is one way that we work to support our customers through trying financial times and ensure they have access to premier wastewater services.”

“Wateree Community Actions thanks South Carolina Water Utilities for this generous donation,” Annette Tucker, Chief Executive Officer at Wateree Community Actions, commented on the donation. “We strive to assist our community members and donations like this allow us to continue to support our most financially vulnerable ratepayers in Richland and Kershaw counties.”

“This donation is a great example of how businesses can work hand-in-hand with local nonprofits to benefit South Carolinians all across this state," said Richland County Councilwoman and Vice Chair Jesica Mackey. "I would like to thank both South Carolina Water Utilities and Wateree Community Actions, Inc. for their efforts to ensure that residents in Richland County have access to reliable water and wastewater services.”

South Carolina Water Utilities’ customers who would like to apply to receive donated funds may contact Wateree Community Actions directly at 803-807-9812, option 1, for additional details. Wateree Community Actions also manages other federal programs created to assist community members with utility bills.

South Carolina Water Utilities is headquartered in Elgin, South Carolina, and is the largest investor-owned water utility in South Carolina, serving approximately 50,0000 customers across the State. SCWU acquired Palmetto Utilities in September 2020, which is a wastewater service provider to portions of Richland and Kershaw County. South Carolina Water Utilities is a wholly owned subsidiary of SouthWest Water Company.
