The Lourie Center, in keeping with its mission to provide opportunities for older adults to stay physically and intellectually fit, offers continuing education for seniors. The Midlands Lifelong Learning Program is a community education program of academically stimulating courses for adults 50 years of age and older.
Academics and professionals from the community teach on a variety of subjects from within the arts and sciences. The Lourie Center offers an ambitious lineup of five courses for this October, with timely topics to challenge and inspire participants. Registration is now open. See below for details.

Mastering the Art of Aging Well

If “youth is a gift of nature, age is a work of art.” We will discuss ways “to live, to love, to learn and to leave a legacy”, to strengthen your inner landscape and make intelligence life choices. We discover how important developing an attitude of gratitude is to mastering the art of aging well.
Instructor Sandy Olson recently retired after nearly 30 years in
Senior Living where she assisted older adults and their families as they made life-changing decisions. She is enjoying an “encore career” teaching classes and writing articles about Positive Aging.
Legacy Writing

The gift that keeps on giving: writing your personal life story is for yourself as well as for future generations. Memories, connections, events and emotions flow onto the page, inspired by expressive writing techniques and creative prompts. Begin or continue recording your one important and irreplaceable life.

Coping with Climate Chaos– A Conversation

Climate change is all around us. Do we understand it? What can be done? No special knowledge of the subject is required for this interactive course, where participants agree to share their experiences, questions and concerns about climate change. Conversations will focus on facts and feelings, not on politics or ideology. The first two meetings will focus on the science and the last two meetings will focus on possible solutions.
Instructor Dr. Charles Goldman is a retired Professor of Psychiatry, University of South Carolina, who has held leadership positions advocating for action to combat global warming.
Middle East: Bridging the Strait of Gibraltar: North Africa, Andalusia, and Beyond

Beginning with the migration of Muslims to North Africa in the 7th century CE, the Islamization of the region, and the role of the area as a launching pad for the conquest of the southern Iberian Peninsula. From this came hybrid multi-ethnic and multi-religious culture that took root in medieval Iberia until the culmination of the Christian Reconquest with the fall of Granada in 1492 CE. We will explore the consequences of these events, felt from Morocco and Iberia to sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Central and South America.
Instructor Ken Perkins is Emeritus Faculty in the History department at USC. Perkins teaches on the Middle East and North Africa and is in the process of researching and writing a book on European and American tourism in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.
History of American Choir: Jubilee, Spirituals, and Gospel

We will discuss the many influences on American choir music and the genres born of it, specifically, Jubilee Singing (a folk style also known as Shape Note Singing), Spirituals, and Gospel.
Class will learn the basics of the Jubilee/Shape Note singing technique, enjoy a special presentation by the City Baptist Jubilee Choir Union "Special" and discuss the significance of Spirituals and Gospel Music in American culture and history.
Instructor Claudia Williams is the Choir leader for the Brookland Baptist Jubilee Choir and Director of the City Baptist Jubilee Choir Union “Special".
