Columbia, SC (February 8, 2018) – In the world of hip-hop, generations of women have proven they are talented, strong, and fearless. This year’s Love, Peace & Hip-Hop festival is themed All Hail the Queens, honoring female artists who paved the way, changed the game, and transformed the genre into an empowering outlet for women and girls around the globe.
Set for Saturday, April 14 on Columbia, SC’s Main Street, World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day is proud to announce hip-hop legend MC Lyte as headliner for 2018.
One of the most prolific and well-respected female hip-hop artists of all time, MC Lyte opened the door for future female hip-hop artists through a series of firsts: she was the first solo female rapper ever nominated for a Grammy; the first ever to perform at New York’s historic Carnegie Hall; the first to receive a gold single; and in 2006, MC Lyte became the first solo female rapper to be honored/inducted on VH-1’s HIP HOP HONORS. A pioneer in the industry, Lyte is also the first female to perform hip-hop in the White House and first African American female to serve as the President of the Los Angeles chapter of the Recording Academy (Grammy Organization).
MC Lyte first appeared on the scene in 1988 at the age of 17 with her debut album Lyte As A Rock. Lyte then followed her debut with 1989's Eyes on This, featuring the hits “Cha Cha Cha” and "Cappucino.” In 1991, she delivered Act Like You Know, noted for its new jack swing sound and its hit single “Poor Georgie.” Her fourth album, 1993's Ain’t No Other, was her first to reach gold status. The album featured her first top 40 pop hit, “Ruffneck,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Single, making MC Lyte the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy.
“In my opinion, 2018 is the year of the woman, and women’s presence in hip-hop has been significant from the jump,” says Love, Peace & Hip-Hop founder and executive director FatRat Da Czar. “The selection of MC Lyte as this year’s headliner brings strength, smarts, sexy, sassy, and savvy to the stage, which are the qualities that make up hip-hop’s first female icon. MC Lyte is so much bigger than the music. She’s everything.”
A three-day celebration capped by a free, family-friendly festival on Saturday, April 14, the 6th annual World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day will bring over 15,000 attendees to Columbia’s Main Street. Presented by Love, Peace & Hip-Hop, The City of Columbia, and WellCare Healthy Connections, Hip-Hop Family Day is an unforgettable day of fun with the best and brightest live performers, DJs, B-Boy dance crews, hip-hop visual artists, and craft and food vendors.
