CHARLESTON, S.C. – Global surgical nonprofit Operation Smile recently announced the hiring of Colleen Kenny as the Director of Development for U.S. Philanthropy in the Southeast United States. Her territory covers North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. She is joining a U.S. Philanthropy team of directors who are located across the country.

As representatives of Operation Smile, these directors of development work with individuals and family foundations to build trust-based relationships with donors in their region. They also play a vital role in elevating the nonprofit’s presence with influential individuals and organizations. “I’m thrilled to be given this opportunity to join the Operation Smile team and help spread the word about the incredible work the organization does for children and families in developing countries,” says Kenny.

Kenny previously worked in development and alumni relations at Columbia University, Middlebury College and Boston University. Her most recent charitable project involved overseeing fundraising efforts at Berkeley Food & Housing Project, which focuses on providing aid to those experiencing homelessness and food insecurities in the San Francisco Bay area. Kenny holds a business degree from Muhlenberg College and a master’s degree in education from Boston University. She is currently based in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Operation Smile has provided so many patients and families with a pathway for hope and long-term sustainable health and happiness,” Kenny continues. “Operation Smile honors the belief that anyone born with a cleft condition deserves safe, effective, and timely surgery and comprehensive care.”

In her new role with Operation Smile, Kenny will be tasked with strategizing and implementing funding opportunities that support the organization’s global health care and comprehensive care programs. With this support, Operation Smile is not only able to organize surgical programs for countries in need of health care assistance but also continue its efforts in building the infrastructure needed for local health workers to perform surgery and offer comprehensive care to their patients. Operation Smile’s directors of development work to match the donors’ enthusiasm and generosity towards the organization’s programmatic funding opportunities. With their commitment and passion for the cause, the nonprofit is able to raise funds through cash and estate giving so it can continue to provide essential treatments to more people around the world.

“As a parent myself, I feel called to do all I can to provide compassionate support to families in need of help through challenging times, says Kenny. “As a new Operation Smile employee, I feel honored to do this work daily. We have so much left to do, but we are making real strides for those that need our assistance.”
