Over 30 Midlands companies contribute $4.5 million to United Way of the Midlands since July 1

Columbia, S.C. (October 1, 2018) – United Way of the Midlands has begun its annual fundraising campaign with employees of 37 companies in the Midlands running early campaigns contributing $4.5 million since July 1, 2018.

“Every year, more than 30,000 Midlands residents are served by United Way-funded programs that meet critical community needs -- creating affordable housing, reducing homelessness, increasing childhood literacy and providing access to dental and eye care,” said Joan Gabel. “Pacesetters are the key to funding programs and solving issues by kicking off the campaign season with a strong start.”

Select companies that increase total campaign results and participation rates over prior year are recognized as United Way Pacesetters. The recognition of this award is given to those companies that complete United Way campaigns by the first week of September and increase either their total campaign by 10% or employee participation by 10% over the prior year’s campaign. The companies also participate in at least one volunteer activity.

“Pacesetter companies go the extra mile by committing to run their campaigns early and setting ambitious goals,” said United Way President & CEO Sara Fawcett. “We are fortunate to have so many community-minded companies with generous employees to make the Midlands a better place for every one of us.”
