Palmetto Place Showcasing Top Midlands’ Chefs at Annual Sweet & Savory Fundraiser
Annual cooking competition benefits programs and housing for homeless teens
Columbia, S.C. – Bring in the Midlands’ top culinary masters, add some of South Carolina’s most prominent food authorities with a dash of the “Funkiest Band Around” and you have a delectable recipe that cooks up the 13th annual Sweet & Savory Chefs Competition benefitting Palmetto Place Children and Youth Services.
The event will be Monday, July 27 at 701 Whaley from 5:30 — 8:30 p.m. and feature 14 chefs, a silent auction and music from The Root Doctors. More than 300 people are expected to attend and they can sample and discover an assortment of savory southern dishes and sweet treats from some of the most talented chefs in the always evolving Columbia, S.C. region’s culinary scene. In addition, Edible Columbia is preparing a specialty cocktail and Tito’s Vodka will sponsor an open bar. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased here.
This year’s competition includes chefs Lawrence Wright and Vinnie Livoti from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Brenda Perry and Jamel Reynolds from Southern Foodservice Management, Dave Grillo from Cantina 76 and Za’s Pizza, Frank Bradley from Bourbon, Jason Bruner from 1801 Grille, Jessica Shillato from Spotted Salamander, Ashley Brundrick from Primal Gourmet Kitchen + Market, Howard Stevens from Market on Main, Tess Ward from Motor Supply Bistro Co., Shaun and Crystal Paulk from The Donut Guy, Jedediah Thompson with Café Strudel West Columbia, and Paul Cernasky from Alodia’s Cucina Italiana. In response to COVID-19, Palmetto Place is providing $400 to each chef for food expenses assistance.
“This is an incredibly challenging time for the food service industry and we wanted to show the chefs how much we appreciate them donating their time and talents to our organization’s signature event,” says Jill McHugh, Executive Director. “We use donations from Sweet & Savory throughout the year to provide housing and support to youth experiencing homelessness. Providing that continuum of care is critical for these teens to ensure they maintain self-sufficiency and permanent housing. Studies show that 1 in 4 youth who age out of foster care become homeless immediately. Palmetto Place is fortunate to provide housing and services to more than 200 children and youth across our programs annually with support from our donors, grantors and village of volunteers.”

Since April of 1977, Palmetto Place has been a home for children and teens who are experiencing crisis. We provide a safe, loving environment where children and youth who have been abused or neglected can heal from the wounds of their trauma. We prepare teens to live independently and help them reach self-sufficiency. In 2016, we expanded our shelter from one house with 20 beds to two houses with more than 50 beds and expanded again in 2019 with a Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program.
