Prisma Health Richland Hospital achieves Magnet® recognition

Columbia, SC— Prisma Health Richland Hospital has achieved Magnet® recognition as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork, and superiority in patient care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program ® distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence.

This credential is the highest status for nursing excellence globally and is testament to the countless contributions Richland’s nurses, in collaboration with other team members, have made in their commitment to provide high-quality patient care.

Richland is the fifth Prisma Health hospital to receive Magnet recognition, joining Baptist, Baptist Parkridge, Greenville Memorial and Greer Memorial hospitals, and is now among only seven in South Carolina. Oconee Memorial Hospital is preparing to begin its Magnet journey.

“This is an exclusive club!” said Maryann Barnes, Richland’s chief nursing officer. “Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the U.S. are Magnet-designated.”

She and Kristen Dickens, director of nursing practice excellence, agree the elite status differentiates our hospitals from others in the state.

“Magnet says to the community they are going to get top-notch care,” Dickens said. “And for nurses, it represents a superior practice environment, a place that is committed to professional development and patient safety.”

Barnes added, “This is a point of pride for our folks because it shows we are committed to our patients and focused on quality care. Magnet attests we are using the most recent available research and evaluating our work to make sure we have processes in place to help us change when we need to. It represents a very collaborative workplace.”

They should be proud, said Jean Meyer, Prisma Health’s chief nursing executive. “Magnet is an exclusive designation that recognizes organizations for nursing excellence, transformational leadership, high-quality care and nursing satisfaction and empowers professional practice. Though the designation is for nursing, the entire organization is involved in a highly collaborative way.”

Magnet surveyors said nurses at Richland described an environment that is patient-centered, promotes learning and values nurses’ input. Physicians portrayed the nurses as compassionate, knowledgeable and with a strong work ethic. Nurses said their relationships with physicians are collaborative and demonstrate respect for nurses’ assessments.

“Prisma Health is, and always will be, committed to nursing excellence,” Meyer said. “Nursing excellence leads to improved quality and improved patient outcomes. Excellent and satisfied nurses lead to recruitment and retention of the best.”
