West Columbia, SC-- Key Changes Therapy Services, Inc., a local therapy clinic with a focus on creative arts therapies, will be holding its spring recital on May 4, 2019 at Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia. The performance is an inclusive one, with performers of all abilities taking part.
Many children with disabilities are unable to take part in the traditional recitals that are a rite of passage for children and families everywhere. Teachers with training to adapt instruments and teaching methods to each individual child are few and far between. Key Changes aims to correct that issue by making music lessons with board certified music therapists available and affordable through their fundraising efforts and in partnership with the SC Arts Commission.
Natalie Mullis, founder and executive director, relates the event to other childhood performances that take place throughout the year. “Just like in your standard piano performance, our recital is a celebration of the growth and achievements of the children. It’s a showcase of the skills that they have been working on in their sessions with music therapists, and the only difference is that these kids have a different set of obstacles to deal with in the learning process.”
The event, while focused on the accomplishments of its participants, is also a fundraising opportunity for the creative arts therapies fund, which provides financial assistance for services like music therapy. Admission is free, but guests are invited to participate in an online raffle, or sponsor an artist.
Artist Sponsorships are being offered to the public. Artist Sponsors will have the opportunity to present a flower and certificate of recognition to an artist after their performance. A one-time contribution of $150 sponsors a single artist, and covers a month of half hour sessions. There are a limited number of sponsorship spots available.
