Richland Library Tele-Town Hall Aims to Connect Local Kinship Caregivers

More than 130,000 children are in kinship care across South Carolina, according to recent reports, and Richland Library is trying to connect with the grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, neighbors, family friends, educators, mentors or others who are looking after the welfare of these children.

We are hosting a Kinship Caregivers Tele-Town Hall, starting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 14. Hear representatives from the following agencies during the hour-long call:

-Richland Library
-Epworth Children's Home
-South Carolina Legal Services
-South Carolina Department of Education
-South Carolina Department of Social Services

The library plans to address some of the general, educational, financial and legal responsibilities of being a caregiver as well as resources that are available in the community.

"The goal is providing support to kinship caregivers and getting answers to their questions," said Social Work Manager Lee Patterson. "We're removing the financial component and providing access to these different agencies in the same place at the same time."

A question-and-answer session is set to follow presentations from the representatives.

Some Richland County residents may receive a call prior to the program, asking them to participate. If not, anyone can join by dialing 855-756-7520, Ext. 62447#.
