COLUMBIA, S.C. (June 22, 2019) -- On Saturday, June 29th at 6pm, a ceremony honoring the late Michael Juras will be held at the Rosewood Community Orchard (Owens Field Park, 1381 Jim Hamilton Blvd, Columbia, SC 29205). A plaque honoring Michael’s work on the orchard will be installed on a new kiosk designed and built by University of South Carolina students.

Where: Rosewood Community Orchard at Owens Field Park
When: June 29th, 6pm
What: Dedication Ceremony of the plaque honoring the Late Michael Juras

The Rosewood Community Orchard was started in 2011 when the Corporation for Economic Opportunity and The City of Columbia won a nationwide competition sponsored by Edy’s Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation . The "Communities Take Root"; orchard competition, a program meant to provide a source of fresh fruit by planting fruit tree orchards in deserving communities throughout the United States, awarded grants to several cities whose citizens voted on-line to support their proposed orchard.

In 2013, Columbia Resilience took over management of the orchard and revived it as a permaculture orchard, offering local residents food and gardening information. Mari Stuart and Dan Bilderback created a design for the site, and Michael Juras, a certified permaculturalist and chair of the Orchard Working Group, implemented their design with modifications as needed. Today, apple trees, pear trees, fig trees, herb gardens, and much more can be found thriving due to a high-quality soil composition and drip irrigation designed and built by Michael.

Michael tragically passed away on September 7, 2017, the day after he collapsed doing one of his favorite things: cycling through the streets of Columbia. Attendees are encouraged to bring sticky notes with memories of Michael, especially if he helped you as a gardener. These notes will be posted on the new kiosk.
