Columbia, S.C. – May 8, 2020 – The South Carolina Wildlife Federation has partnered with Hilton Head Author, Elizabeth Belenchia to bring awareness to the challenges of loggerhead turtles as they return to coastal beaches to nest. Released in 2017, My Walk to the Water highlights the challenges the turtles face and the need to “put the beaches to sleep” to help the adult turtles and their hatchlings. This recently announced partnership brings the book to life through an exclusive video reading by the author. The recording is available on the organization’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. “Elizabeth is a global business leader in real estate and sustainability and a passionate turtle advocate,” commented Sara Green, executive director, South Carolina Wildlife Federation. “She shares our love for wildlife and their protection. We’re excited to share this reading at the start of our state’s turtle nesting season, which ironically coincides with Mother’s Day.”
My Walk to the Water chronicles the life of “Elizabeth,” a loggerhead sea turtle who returns to her home on Hilton Head to nest. The author brings awareness to the many man-made obstacles the mother and her hatchlings encounter during their time on the beach and offers memorable guidance for readers.
“From coastal growth to the rising ocean levels of our changing climate, the loggerhead turtles are under tremendous pressure,” commented Elizabeth Belenchia, author, My Walk to the Water. “By sharing Elizabeth’s story, I hope to make a personal connection with readers and inspire action to ensure the future of this special species.”
National Wildlife Federation’s eastern field director, Samantha Lockhart noted, “Rising sea levels brought on by climate change have been decimating critical nesting habitat for the iconic sea turtles. It’s really exciting for us to engage the next generation of conservationists in this fight through this incredible story.”
Belenchia’s reading was recorded by Hilton Head Island Community Church. The book is available for purchase on the SCWF website and through local booksellers. A portion of the proceeds support SCWF and the international organization, 1% for the planet.
