SUMTER, South Carolina, August 1, 2019– SAFE Federal Credit Union’s response to Hurricane Florence has earned it the 2019 Editor’s Choice Award for Community Commitment from CardRates.com.
Through its sale of emergency lanterns, SAFE donated $25,000 to disaster relief following Hurricane Florence. The 2018 storm dealt limited damage to South Carolina but brought widespread flooding to North Carolina.
“We were spared from Florence when we were expecting to have a heavy hit,” said James Montgomery, VP of Operations. “Every dollar we made went to communities that had been impacted.”
"We regularly speak with credit unions and banks around the nation, paying close attention to signs that institutions are helping consumers and bettering the communities in which they serve,” said Adam West, Managing Editor for CardRates.com. “We found SAFE Federal Credit Union to be a standout institution in this regard."
The award also cited SAFE’s community volunteer work and philanthropy, noting the credit union has donated more than $215,000 to local charities and community organizations over the past two years.
In addition, the credit union gives full-time employees 16 payable volunteer hours each year to support community service initiatives.
“SAFE’s brand embodies “Family Values. Forward Vision.” Montgomery said. “That’s the attitude we embrace most — serving others before ourselves.”
Based in Sumter, SAFE Federal Credit Union serves more than 126,000 members and is one of the largest financial institutions headquartered in South Carolina.
