AIKEN, S.C. (June 5, 2019) — Savannah River Remediation’s (SRR) employee group, Women@LiquidWaste (W@LW), gave local women a night to remember by sponsoring their attendance at the annual Women’s Leadership Council United Way Gala. SRR is the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS).
SRR teamed up with corporate partners Bechtel and Jacobs to raise over $900 in gift cards. W@LW gave the gift cards to the women, who live in Aiken County’s Nurture Home, as Mother’s Day gifts. The funds went toward gowns for the women and their daughters for the gala, and any leftover money was used to purchase new comforter sets for the shelter.
Nurture Home is a program run by Mental Health America of Aiken County. The goal of the program is to empower women, and ultimately, end the cycle of homelessness.
SRR Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Employee Concerns Program (ECP) Compliance Manager Stephanie Franklin serves as the chairperson for the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of Aiken. She believes that bringing gender equality into the workplace through organizations like W@LW betters the whole community.
“When the decision was made to create W@LW, the company further empowered the workforce to embrace the talents and contributions of women of the liquid waste contract,” Franklin said.
The sponsored women attended the United Way Gala alongside members of W@LW. The gala is a fundraiser of which the main goal is to give grants to people who are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of women and children in Aiken County.
“If society is ever going to truly embrace equality, then women have to compete and participate on the same level with equivalent opportunities as their counterparts,” Franklin said. “W@LW exemplifies SRR’s mission to give to the community and continues to inspire women in and out of the workforce.”
W@LW is an SRR employee resource group that helps employees enhance their professional knowledge and experiences to strengthen their leadership skills. The purpose of the group is to provide information, resources, and networking opportunities for those who are women aspiring to be in leadership; desire to strengthen their leadership abilities; and/or interested in discussing perceived barriers for women in the workplace.
SRR is a team of companies led by AECOM with partners Bechtel National, Jacobs, and BWX Technologies, Inc. Critical subcontractors for the contract are Orano, Atkins, and AECOM N&E Technical Solutions.
