Programming courses available online for free for any South Carolina resident
COLUMBIA, S.C. - (July 1, 2020) - SC Codes, a statewide program aimed at providing free access to code education, and Tallo, an online platform that connects talent with opportunities, today announced a new partnership designed to open educational and workforce pathways for those with programming skills.
The partnership allows for learners who complete any one of SC Codes’ eight modules - from Front-End Basics to Ruby Concepts and more - to claim a “digital badge” and highlight their skills on their personalized Tallo digital portfolio.
SC Codes and Tallo have similar goals. SC Codes is helping upskill the workforce in hopes of filling the void of available technology jobs in South Carolina. The program currently has over 7,000 registered users across the state.
Tallo matches talented individuals with the right jobs, internships, college programs, and scholarship money. The free app and digital platform allows users to showcase talents and skills on their digital portfolio so that colleges, companies, and organizations can identify and connect with them on the app. There are currently over 102,000 Tallo users in South Carolina, and over 5,700 indicate an interest in Computer Science.
“Learners who complete modules on the SC Codes platform are truly gaining both an understanding of programming and gaining skills that are valuable to our tech workforce,” said Lelia King, executive director of Build Carolina, which runs the SC Codes program. “This partnership allows SC Codes completers to better showcase their accomplishments and connect with the best next step for them, whether that’s additional education or employment opportunities.”
At last count, there were nearly 10,000 jobs for software developers in South Carolina. According to CompTIA’s 2020 Cyberstates report, employment in the tech industry expanded by over 5,000 jobs in 2019 and the tech sector represents 6% of South Carolina’s economy.
"The Tallo platform exists to ensure that the next generation of talent has access to the right opportunities," said Casey Welch, CEO and Co-Founder of Tallo. "The technology sector is crucial to South Carolina's development, and our new partnership with SC Codes is an exciting way to provide training and access to our community for free."
SC Codes, a platform powered by the S.C. Department of Commerce Office of Innovation, was launched in September 2018. The platform allows for 24/7 access to free online curriculum for any interested resident. For more information, visit sccodes.org.
