SRNS AMP Members Learn What It Means to “Lead Yourself”

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) Senior Vice President of Technical Services Rick Sprague gives an introduction at Leadercast, a live streaming event sponsored by SRNS Aspiring Mid-Career Professionals. The event, themed “Lead Yourself,” took place on May 4 at Cedar Creek Church in Aiken, S.C.

AIKEN, S.C. – May 8, 2018 – On Friday, May 4, more than 150 Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) executives, senior leaders, work group managers and Aspiring Mid-Career Professionals (AMP) members gathered at Cedar Creek Church in Aiken, S.C., for the fifth annual Leadercast live streaming event.

“The focus of this year’s event was to equip us with the tools and knowledge necessary to lead change in our careers, our company and our community,” said Katie Heroux, AMP President and Fellow Program Manager at Savannah River National Laboratory. “Before leading others effectively, you must first learn how to lead yourself. You must walk the walk. It’s like flight attendants stating, ‘Please remember to secure your own oxygen mask before helping others’.”

Each table was sponsored by a senior manager who led discussions about the Leadercast content, which was themed “Lead Yourself.” This format encouraged attendees to identify their own core values and recognize limiting beliefs that may hinder success.

“Leadercast gives us the opportunity to network with others,” said AMP member Michelle Holman-Abbott of Program Integration and Technical Support, National Nuclear Security Administration Operations and Programs. “Through this event, I’m able to meet other AMP members and senior leaders I normally wouldn’t cross paths with in my job. Also, the Leadercast speakers inspire me to thrive both personally and professionally.”

The leadership event was broadcast live from Atlanta, Ga., to hundreds of off-site locations around the world. Leadercast is the largest one-day leadership event in the world and brings together some of the most recognized and respected global leaders to create a leadership experience unlike any other. The local viewing was organized and hosted by AMP.

The speakers included Carey Lohrenz, the first female F-14 Tomcat Fighter Pilot in the U.S. Navy; Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball; Dr. Mae Jemison, engineer, physician and NASA astronaut; Dr. Jim Loehr, CEO and Co-Founder of Human Performance Institute; Kat Cole, COO and President, North America of FOCUS Brands; Ian Morgan Cron, author and psychotherapist; Michael Hyatt, author and leadership coach; Jen Bricker, acrobat, aerialist and author; and Andy Stanley, leadership author.

“I want to extend my thanks to all of the leaders in our company who continue to make this event possible,” added Heroux. “AMP strives to make Leadercast extend beyond the one-day event by having follow-up meetings to help participants retain what they’ve learned. Throughout the rest of the year, each table will have the opportunity to organize their own ‘mini mentoring’ sessions to continue working and building upon the goals they set at Leadercast.”

Sponsored by SRNS, AMP serves SRNS full-time employees who have at least seven years of work experience, offering professional development, networking and community outreach opportunities.
