AIKEN, S.C. (July 19, 2018)— Daniel Morris, a freshman at Claflin University, received a Savannah River Remediation (SRR) Family Scholarship his senior year of high school, and is now an SRR summer intern, giving SRR a return on its investment.
Morris was awarded a $2,000 SRR Family Scholarship in April 2017 before beginning his college career in fall 2017. The goal of the SRR Family Scholarship Program is to recognize and reward excellence in education for children of SRR employees. SRR is the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS).
Upon applying to SRR’s internship posting, Morris said he was excited to receive an opportunity this summer to work in the new intro-internship program for freshman and sophomore college students.
“SRR has provided my family, and others, with financial assistance to help with college expenses through the SRR Family Scholarship program,” said Morris. “I’m grateful SRR has given me another opportunity by hiring me as an intern for the intro-internship program this summer.”
For Morris, he used some of his scholarship award toward fees for organizations that he is currently involved in, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Public Health Association, the Young Democrats of America, and the National Society of Leadership. He also joined the Claflin University Choir and the SRC South Step Team during his first semester.
Morris also used his scholarship award to purchase a new computer for his course work and to purchase dorm and school supplies.
With SRS being one of the largest employers in South Carolina, the internship opportunity was one Morris could not pass up. The intro-internship program was introduced this summer for freshman and sophomore college students to gain real-world work experience early in their college career by working with the SRR Accounting department.
Morris aspires to go to law school after obtaining his undergraduate degree in Political Science and plans on becoming a corporate attorney and part-time educator. Morris said he is enjoying this internship because he gets to interact with many different people in each department within SRR while performing timekeeping audit checks, important work for the Accounting department.
“Receiving the SRR Family Scholarship was the first step in helping me achieve my academic goals of graduating college and becoming a corporate attorney,” said Morris. “If I was given the opportunity to work for SRR in the future, I would be proud to contribute to the liquid waste mission, which means helping my community, as well as the nation.”
SRR is the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site for the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is composed of a team of companies led by AECOM with partners Bechtel National, CH2M, and BWX Technologies. Critical subcontractors for the contract are Orano, Atkins, and AECOM N&E Technical Services.
