(COLUMBIA, S.C.,) - The Midlands Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is pleased to announce that Brooks Mathews of Columbia has been nominated as a candidate for LLS’s 2019 Woman of the Year. Candidates across the county form powerful fundraising teams to raise the most funds for blood cancer research and compete in honor of two local children who are blood cancer survivors.
Mathews, a teacher at Heathwood Hall, is one of an elite group of community and business leaders who will compete for the titles of LLS’s Man & Woman of the Year. Competing for these titles is an honor surrounded with a great deal of fanfare, including a full-page ad in USA Today.
“The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a cause that is extremely close to my heart,” said Mathews. “For the majority of the last seven years, I’ve been a passionate advocate for finding a cure through Camp Kemo Programs and Relay for Life. My heart is constantly touched year after year experiencing the strength and resilience of those facing one of the toughest battles in their lives, yet consistently exemplifying positivity and overwhelming joy! I’m honored and humbled to be a candidate for the LLS Woman of the Year and will absolutely strive every step of the way to get one step closer to finding a cure for blood cancers!”
As a candidate, Mathews will raise funds for a world without blood cancers between March 5th and May 16th, 2019. The man and woman candidates who raise the most funds during the 10-week campaign will be awarded the titles Midlands Man & Woman of the Year at a Grand Finale on May 16th at the USC Alumni Center. The local winners are then entered into the competition for National Man & Woman of the Year titles.
