The University of South Carolina Press announces new list of South Carolina-focused books for Spring + Summer 2022

The University of South Carolina Press has released its catalog of forthcoming Spring & Summer books, with a biography of Hootie and the Blowfish as the lead title.

ONLY WANNA BE WITH YOU: THE INSIDE STORY OF HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH (hardcover; April) by music journalist Tim Sommer — the ultimate insider who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1993 — is the exclusive, behind-the-scenes story of South Carolina’s hometown heroes’ chart-topping band. “This book isn’t just the best thing ever written about Hootie & the Blowfish, although it is. It may well be the best thing ever written about an American rock band, period,” says Matthew Goodman, best-selling author of EIGHTY DAYS and THE CITY GAME.

University of South Carolina fans, alumni, and students will want a copy of UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN FOCUS (hardcover; August), a colorful portrait of the Palmetto State’s flagship campus. Connor Shaw, the Gamecock’s all-time winningest quarterback, provides a foreword.

South Carolina’s history is illuminated in THE WORDS AND WARES OF DAVID DRAKE (paperback; August), which features photos of enslaved Edgefield artist Dave the Potter’s remarkable craft and accompanying essays by leading scholars. Revisit antebellum South Carolina in the first biography of the little-known but crucial secessionist James Chesnut Jr., THE MAN WHO STARTED THE CIVIL WAR (paperback; June).

See Jim Crow South Carolina through the eyes of two memoirists: in BEATRICE’S LEDGER (hardcover; May), about a Black farming family’s struggle to survive and the transformative power of family, courage, and education in the Lowcountry; and CHILD (paperback; May), about love in the shadow of white privilege and racism in the upstate.

The catalog also includes new editions of classic South Carolina bestsellers ROW UPON ROW (paperback; April) and A GUIDE TO SOUTH CAROLINA WILDFLOWERS (paperback; August).
