Columbia, S.C. (December 15, 2018) – United Way of the Midlands is hosting a donation drive to collect items for the area’s annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count held January 23 – 29, 2019.
"The PIT Count serves two functions: to count the number of people experiencing homelessness over a specified period and to gather information on the demographics and service needs of the local homeless population,” said Sara Fawcett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “The 2018 Point-in-Time Count Report shows that the number of individuals experiencing homelessness during the night of the PIT Count has decreased overall by 40 percent over the past five years, and Richland County has seen a decrease of 50 percent.”
The donation drive is an effort to collect new, cold-weather items including gloves, hats, scarves and more that volunteers will hand out during the January count to those experiencing homelessness. A full list of donation items and a link to United Way’s Amazon PIT Count Wish List can be found at www.uway.org/events. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to United Way of the Midlands located at 1818 Blanding Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201. All items should be delivered or dropped off by Friday, January 4, 2019 at 5:00 p.m.
Community members interested in hosting a donation drive should contact Cathy Hood-Pittenger, United Way of the Midlands Homeless Services Coordinator, at email@example.com.
